Land-Drill is delighted to announce that work has commenced on Phase 2 of our prestigious contract with Glasgow City Council for the 2014 Commonwealth Games Athletes' village.
The Commonwealth Games today is a huge international event, with 71 countries and over 6,500 athletes taking part over 10 days of world class events, attracting hundreds of thousands of sports fans from all over the world to the city of Glasgow, allied to a T.V. audience in the hundreds of millions.
So, as befitting a games of this stature, the athletes village will be a huge undertaking, providing accommodation for up to 8000 people, with allocations of no more than two people per room.
The new community will be based on the banks of the river Clyde, but the size of the village is on a never before seen scale, being twice the size of the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games village, covering some 38.5 hectares.
Phase 2 of the village was a highly contested tender, and despite being awarded Phase 1, securing Phase 2 was by no means a foregone conclusion. Delighted Operations Director Gordon Pennykid remarked, "Winning Phase 2 of the works with Grontmij is a huge boost, and reflects well on the working relationships built up during the initial Phase". At an estimated cost of £245 million, Glasgow City Council is mindful of the need to extract full value from the village once the games are finished and to this end there will be extensive internal re-conversion of the site to provide houses for sale or socially rented housing which will help breathe new life into the area and make sure the Games leave a lasting legacy of which we can all be proud |
